Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced that Malta will officially recognize the State of Palestine next month, citing moral responsibility and the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Speaking at a political event, Abela condemned the ongoing violence, which has claimed nearly 54,000 Palestinian lives—mostly women and children. “We cannot turn a blind eye to this human tragedy,” he said.
The recognition will take place during an international conference on June 20.
Abela also expressed deep sorrow over the killing of nine children of Palestinian doctor Alaa Al-Najjar in an Israeli airstrike on their home in Khan Younis. Malta has offered refuge to the surviving members of her family.
This move reflects Malta’s commitment to peace and justice and may influence other EU countries to follow suit.
